Fictional case 05 · Aviation investigations and forensic review
The cargo manifest revised after crew sign off
Kenya, Bahrain and Italy
The allegation
A charter pilot is accused of knowingly transporting controlled substances after undeclared packages are recovered from an aircraft. An electronic cargo manifest carries the pilot's approval. The prosecution argues that the approval demonstrates acceptance of the recovered cargo. The pilot says the packages were added after the crew reviewed the load.
The independent investigation
365 ALTERAM coordinates aviation and digital specialists to compare manifest versions, electronic signature records, load sheets, dispatch communications and handling logs. The pilot approved an earlier version. A later revision added a consignment while retaining the displayed approval from the earlier document. Ground-handling records corroborate late loading, although the available camera footage does not identify every package. The aviation specialist separately notes that the pilot did not complete one required check. The report therefore distinguishes a documented procedural omission from evidence of knowing involvement in trafficking.
The hearing and fictional outcome
At the fictional hearing, the defence demonstrates the document history using preserved source records. The court acquits the pilot of knowingly transporting the illicit cargo because the attributed approval does not cover the revised consignment. A separate regulatory process examines the omitted check. The judgment explains why the omission is relevant to operational responsibility but does not, on this record, establish criminal knowledge.
The principle in practice
A signature must be connected to the document version and information available when it was given. Meaningful defence participation allows the court to examine that connection before drawing conclusions about knowledge.
Forensic deliverable
A manifest version history, operational chronology and memorandum separating technical findings from legal questions.
What this illustration demonstrates
Independent examination must record what supports the allegation, what challenges it and what remains unresolved. 365 ALTERAM supports counsel with source-linked findings and specialist coordination; the competent authority determines the legal consequences.
