Fictional case 02 · Narcotics investigations and forensic review

The seal that changed after the handover

Ecuador, Spain and Germany

The allegation

A truck driver delivers an imported container in which customs officers discover cocaine. His signature appears on the handover record, and DNA consistent with his profile is detected on an exterior door handle. Prosecutors interpret these facts as evidence that he knowingly participated in the importation. The initial case summary gives little attention to the container's movements before collection.

The independent investigation

365 ALTERAM coordinates a comparison of terminal photographs, seal records, vehicle movements and warehouse access logs. The records show a seal-number change during a period when the driver had no documented custody of the container. An independently instructed DNA specialist reviews the sampling and reporting: contact with the external handle is compatible with ordinary work and cannot establish when the concealed cargo was introduced. A chemical specialist confirms that the available laboratory evidence supports the identification of cocaine, while separately recording limits in the sampling documentation. The driver made the delivery; the disputed issue is his knowledge.

The hearing and fictional outcome

The defence presents the custody reconstruction alongside the original prosecution evidence. In the fictional hearing, the terminal witness confirms that the unexplained seal change was omitted from the first chronology. The court acquits the driver because the evidence does not establish knowing participation. Its reasons distinguish the reliable identification of the substance from the unsupported inference about the driver's awareness.

The principle in practice

Hearing the defence exposes a gap between proving what a container held and proving what its driver knew. The alternative explanation must be tested against the same records as the allegation.

What this illustration demonstrates

Independent examination must record what supports the allegation, what challenges it and what remains unresolved. 365 ALTERAM supports counsel with source-linked findings and specialist coordination; the competent authority determines the legal consequences.
