Fictional case 09 · Oil and gas fraud with maritime and offshore forensic review
The offshore cargo that appeared to disappear
West Africa, United Arab Emirates and the Mediterranean
The allegation
An operations manager is accused of diverting crude oil from an offshore production facility. A comparison of loading and discharge figures suggests a substantial shortage. Investigators also describe a vessel's apparent inactivity as evidence that a reported voyage never occurred. The manager denies any diversion and attributes every discrepancy to measurement differences.
The independent investigation
365 ALTERAM coordinates petroleum measurement, maritime and financial specialists. They reconcile meter records, temperature and density conventions, inspection reports, terminal receipts, charter documents and voyage evidence. Much of the apparent shortage results from comparing volumes expressed on different measurement bases. Port and operational records also support the voyage despite a gap in the available AIS data. A smaller quantity remains unexplained. Further disclosed records show an unauthorised delivery and a receipt knowingly approved by the manager. The report quantifies the supported discrepancy and records the evidence against the manager alongside the corrections favourable to him.
The hearing and fictional outcome
At the fictional trial, the competing experts explain the measurement reconciliation and the remaining delivery evidence. The court rejects the alleged scale of the diversion but convicts the manager for the specifically substantiated conduct. Its sentencing reasons use the supported quantity and proved individual role, rather than the much larger initial estimate. The manager's blanket denial is also rejected.
The principle in practice
A fair hearing requires scrutiny of technical calculations as well as the defence explanation. Independent investigation can correct an overstated allegation while preserving evidence that supports a narrower conviction.
Forensic deliverable
A reconciled cargo balance, voyage chronology and quantified schedule of supported and unresolved discrepancies.
What this illustration demonstrates
Independent examination must record what supports the allegation, what challenges it and what remains unresolved. 365 ALTERAM supports counsel with source-linked findings and specialist coordination; the competent authority determines the legal consequences.
