Fictional case 10 · Corporate extortion and organised crime investigations
The interpreter accused of directing the threats
Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom
The allegation
An interpreter is accused of directing an international extortion campaign against a company. Investigators rely on a threatening audio recording containing her voice, payments from an intermediary and messages she forwarded between the parties. The interpreter says she provided ordinary language services and had no knowledge of criminal demands.
The independent investigation
365 ALTERAM coordinates lawful examination of the original recordings, message exports, invoices, account records and transaction history. Audio analysis establishes that the prosecution clip joins passages from two calls and omits a passage in which the interpreter says she is relaying another speaker's words. Original messages identify a different person as the source of the demands. However, later correspondence shows that the interpreter continued assisting after acknowledging the coercive purpose. A linguist explains the difference between the speaker of a translated sentence and the person issuing the underlying instruction. Financial analysis tests what each payment actually related to.
The hearing and fictional outcome
The defence presents the complete audio and contextual transcript, and the prosecution challenges the alternative account. In the fictional judgment, the court rejects the allegation that the interpreter directed the campaign, but convicts her of a narrower offence of knowing assistance. Its reasons distinguish innocent early work from the later conduct supported by the correspondence and explain why the edited clip cannot establish leadership.
The principle in practice
The right to be heard includes a meaningful opportunity to restore missing context. A complete record may undermine a leadership allegation while still supporting responsibility for particular acts.
Forensic deliverable
An authenticated audio chronology, contextual transcript and individual role and payment analysis.
What this illustration demonstrates
Independent examination must record what supports the allegation, what challenges it and what remains unresolved. 365 ALTERAM supports counsel with source-linked findings and specialist coordination; the competent authority determines the legal consequences.
