Fictional case 01 · Telecommunications and mobile data forensics
The phone attributed to the wrong user
Belgium and Brazil
The allegation
A logistics supervisor is accused of coordinating a criminal shipment. Investigators place him near a port warehouse through cell-site records and attribute calls from a company handset to him. A police chart presents a continuous sequence of his supposed movements. The defence initially receives the chart and selected call records, without the underlying provider export or the basis for identifying the handset's user.
The independent investigation
In this fictional case, counsel instructs 365 ALTERAM to reconstruct the analytical steps. A telecom specialist compares the disclosed network records with the chart, checks time conventions and assesses the location claims. The review finds that the chart combines two SIMs used in a shared company phone and treats a cell sector as an exact address. Shift records and access-control logs identify another employee as the handset's custodian during several decisive calls. Other calls remain unattributed. The investigators also retain an adverse finding: the supervisor's own device contacted one alleged participant on a different date.
The hearing and fictional outcome
Counsel obtains further disclosure and questions the original analyst with a source-linked comparison of the records. In the fictional judgment, the court explains why the cell-site material cannot establish the supervisor's presence at the warehouse and why the remaining contact does not establish coordination. It acquits him of directing the shipment, while expressly acknowledging that the review has not identified every caller.
The principle in practice
The defence can test a location allegation meaningfully only when it can examine the records and reasoning behind the map. A reasoned decision must address the limits of both location and user attribution.
Forensic deliverable
An identifier map, corrected chronology and report on location uncertainty.
What this illustration demonstrates
Independent examination must record what supports the allegation, what challenges it and what remains unresolved. 365 ALTERAM supports counsel with source-linked findings and specialist coordination; the competent authority determines the legal consequences.
